大阪中心部の幹線道路のほとんどは、南北の道は「筋」、東西の道は「通り」と名付けられています。
御堂筋や四つ橋筋、谷町筋、堺筋は南北、千日前通 や長堀通などは東西。
太閤秀吉が大坂城下の街づくりを行ったときの名残だとか。ちなみに、丁名などは大阪城から遠いほど大きい数字になります。
これさえ押さえておけば、大阪市営地下鉄の路線図が、意外と簡単に頭に入りますよ。また、ミナミ周辺は江戸期の名残りのある道の名前も多く、食べることだけではなくゆっくり歩くと歴史の勉強にもなります。

In the centre of Osaka most major roads running east-west have names ending with '-suji' and those north-south with '-dori'.
Sennichimae-dori and Nagahori-dori are the main east-west roads and Mido-suji, Yotsubashi-suji, Tanimachi-suji and Sakai-suji are main north-south roads.
The names are said to trace back to when Toyotomi Hideyoshi established the city around Osaka Castle. It might be helpful to know that further you go from Osaka Castle, the larger the street numbers become.
Osaka is not only the place for food but is also a place you can enjoy historical walks. There are a number of streets around Minami, south side of Mido-suji, with names from the Edo Era.
