上海から入ってきたジャズが大阪で流行し、宗右衛門町、道頓堀にダンスホールとジャズスポットが立ち並び、カフェなどでも演奏され、アメリカ、イギリス、フランスなどの白人・黒人ミュージシャンが演奏をしました。
客はミナミの旦那衆で、お連れは芸妓や女郎、カフェの女給などでした。
昭和のはじめには、宗右衛門町の河合会館の館主、河合宗那（かわいそうな）が「河合ダンス」という芸妓ばかりのレビューをはじめました。
戦後もジャズの伝統はつづき、戎橋詰めにあった「サイト・ハウス」は戦後最古のライブ・ハウスです。
この平屋建が昭和三五年に「吉本ビル」になり、二階の喫茶ルームで一階ステージの生演奏が聴けた。のちに吉本の本社は「吉本ビル」に移り、ホールは「心斎橋二丁目劇場」に改称、お笑い新人の登龍門となりました。このあと阪急東通り商店街にあった「レッド・アロー」が、大阪のジャズの殿堂にとってかわり、今はお初天神通り商店街にある「ニューサントリー５」が大阪ホットジャズの基地となっています。

巨大看板
道頓堀といえば、ひときわ目立つ巨大な看板。
来たことはなくても、テレビや雑誌で見たことのある方は多いと思います。
道頓堀川の横で大きく手を広げる『グリコ』の看板をはじめ、道頓堀を象徴するような看板がたくさんあります。
かに、いか、たこ、人形、その他にもいろいろありますよ。

一寸法師
道頓堀川は、一寸法師がお椀に乗って出発したといわれている土地です。
今では若者が飛び込む川として有名になっていまいましたが、歴史ある場所のひとつです。
法善寺横町の復興を祈って、道頓堀川で個性的なお碗に乗って競う イベントも開催されました。
通り過ぎたり飛び込んだりするだけではなく、道頓堀川のほとりで昔々のお話を思い出してみませんか？

Jazz introduced from Shanghai became popular in Osaka. Souenmon-cho and Dotonbori were full of dance halls and jazz spots. Jazz was also played by musicians from the USA, the UK and France in cafos.
The main audience was local shop owners accompanied by geisha, prostitutes or cafo hostesses.
In the early Showa Era, Sona Kawai, the owner of Kawai Hall in Souemon-cho, started a show called 'Kawai Dance' by Geisha dancers. It was a dance company with a repertoire from ballet to playing jazz.
Jazz remained popular after the war and the first club with live music, 'Saito House', was opened near Ebisubashi bridge. This one-storey `Saito House` was replaced with Yoshimoto Building in 1960 and live music was played in the ground floor hall, which people enjoyed from the 1st floor tea room. The hall became 'Shinsaibashi 2-chome Gekijo', a gateway for new comedians, when the head office of Yoshimoto Kogyo Ltd, an entertainment agency, moved there. 'Red Arrow' in Hankyu Higashi-dori Arcade then became Osaka Jazz Hall of Fame. Current hot jazz base is 'New Suntory 5' in Ohatsu Tenjin-dori Arcade.
Glico's neon billboard with a runner spreading his arms widely is one of the symbolic displays in Dotonbori.
Others are a moving crab, squid, octopus and so on, which could be good snaps.
There was a bowl boat race in Dotonbori in 2002 wishing the revival of Hozenji Yokocho, which had been burnt down earlier that year.

The Inch-high Samurai
The Dotonbori river has recently become famous as a lot of youngsters jump into it. However, it is also a historical spot where the Inch-High Samurai, Issun Boshi, a character in a famous fairly tale took a trip from to Kyoto in a wooden soup bowl.There was a bowl boat race in Dotonbori in 2002 wishing the revival of Hozenji Yokocho, which had been burnt down earlier that year.
一寸法師のお話
むかし、ある村に、おじいさんとおばあさんがいました。二人は働き者で、なかのよい夫婦でした。けれども、どうしたわけか子供がありませんでした。
それでいつも話すことと言えば、「なあ、おばあさん。ひとりでいいから、子供がほしいなあ」
「ほんとにそうだね」ということばかりでした。
とうとう、「ふたりで神様に願かけしてみよう」と言うことになって、それから毎朝お宮へお参りをしました。
「神様、どうか、子供をさずけて下さい」
おじいさんとおばあさんは、お宮の鳥居のところで 一休みしているうち、うつらうつらとねむってしまいました。
すると、夢に真っ白いひげの神様が現れて、言いました。
「鳥居を出ると、小さな子供が待っている。その子を育て子にするがいい。」神様はそう言ったとたん、おじいさんもおばあさんも 目がさめました。
おじいさんとおばあさんは、すぐ鳥居から出てみました。するとむこうから、ドングリの実くらいの小さな男の子がやって来ました。
おじいさんとおばあさんは、その子を連れて帰りました。
ふたりはその子が一寸にも足りないくらい小さいので、「一寸法師」と名づけました。
そして、 いつもあずきごはんに魚をつけて、たくさん食べさせました。
おかげで一寸法師は、体は小さくても元気に育ちました。
ある日のこと、一寸法師は｢都に行きたい｣と言いました。
おじいさんもおばあさんも驚きましたが、「それもよかろう。」と言って、承知しました。
Here is a brief story of Issun Boshi
Long, long ago, there lived an old couple living in a village. They were a hardworking couple and happy together.
However, they had no children.
They always talked to each other, `How we wish to have a child. Even one child will make us happy.'
Finally they decided to visit a shrine to pray every morning, 'Please, please let us have a child.'
One day they had a rest by the shrine gate and fell asleep.
In their dreams, God with grey beard appeared and said,
'There will be a small child waiting for you outside the gate. You may take him home and bring him up.' As soon as God said so, both of them woke up.
They then quickly went outside the gate to find a boy as small as an acorn.
The old couple took him to their home.
They named the boy `Issun Boshi`, as he was as small as 'issun' (about 3cms).
He was fed very well to grow into a vigorous boy although he was still very small.
One day he said he wanted to go to a capital city, Kyoto.
The old couple was surprised but agreed.
